What to practise
- Appointments: today or tomorrow, half past times, location changes, and what to bring.
- Health: huisarts, pharmacy, symptoms, waiting, medicine, and new appointments.
- Daily life: school, work, transport, shopping, opening times, bus changes, lessons, and payments.
- Official situations: gemeente, forms, passport, letters, registration, counters, and simple rules.
- Small words that change meaning, such as niet, maar, morgen, later, and opnieuw.
Useful Listening vocabulary
- de afspraak: appointment. Often followed by a time, date, location, or change.
- verzet: moved or rescheduled. A strong clue that the original time is not the answer.
- meenemen: to bring. Listen for paspoort, brief, or identiteitsbewijs.
- de balie: counter or reception desk. Common in gemeente, hospital, school, and service situations.
- gesloten: closed. Often appears with opening hours or public-service notices.
- het perron: platform. Helps with train and bus announcements.
Sample Listening question
- Audio idea: The appointment at the gemeente is not today, but tomorrow at 09:30. Bring your passport.
- Question: When is the appointment? Correct answer: tomorrow at 09:30.
A simple Listening routine
- Identify the situation first: appointment, health, transport, school, work, gemeente, or public announcement.
- Read the answer options first and notice what changes between them.
- Listen for one deciding clue: time, day, person, place, or action.
- Watch for correction words such as niet, maar, morgen, later, and opnieuw.
- Review the phrase that made the correct option different from the others.
Common Listening mistakes
- Choosing after hearing one familiar word instead of waiting for the full sentence.
- Missing correction words such as niet, maar, wel, morgen, vandaag, and later.
- Confusing Dutch times such as half tien and kwart over acht.
- Ignoring where the conversation happens: school, work, gemeente, doctor, or transport.
